Course Description:
Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college preparatory program designed to increase the number of students who are eligible for admission to four-year colleges and universities. This course provides academic instruction from an AVID-trained teacher, tutoring support, assistance with other class assignments, study skills, curriculum enrichment, motivational skills and organizational skills. All course lessons and activities are based around our instructional model of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR).

Student Expectations:
Students must demonstrate a potential and desire to attend a four year college, exhibit appropriate classroom behavior, work towards 3’s or 4’s on all assignments, maintain consistent attendance, demonstrate good work habits, commit to enrollment in a rigorous college preparatory sequence of courses.
Organization:
1) Planners: AVID students are expected to write down all objectives, daily agendas, and homework for ALL classes.
2) Binders: AVID students will maintain a 3-ring binder with labeled dividers for all classes.
3) Materials: AVID students will bring the following to ALL core classes:
-three-ring binder, lined paper, pens & pencils, highlighters, pouch for all, writing utensils, calculator
Graded Assignments:
-Weekly: binder checks, learning logs, tutorial request forms, outside reading check sheets
-Daily Activities/Assignments: Cornell notes, discussions, tutorials, high school/college prep assignments, essays, quick writes, field trips
Students will be graded according to the Standards Based Grading Scale (1-4). Individual assignments/activities are graded using a common rubric.
Parental Support:
Parental support is key for the success of our AVID students. We encourage parents to have a discussion every night about what their student accomplished at school for the day. We also expect parents to check the student’s planner for homework and class assignments. AVID parents are strongly encouraged to attend all Back to School Nights.
